MC1 water pump install question

I have just installed a new water pump and base in my '77 (I think) MC1 outdrive. I don't think I missed anything, but am asking for some input. The plastic water tube that goes from the water pump to the brass tube from the leg seems to be a fairly sloppy fit. I really don't think I have missed any parts (yes I used merc manual) but it is under pressure and needs to push water up the leg and thru the heat exchanger. It sure seems like there would be some loss of water and pressure at this join. Any input for me?
Thanks,
Alan

It has been a while since I have done one on my old boat but I believe the plastic tube is more of a guide than the actual hose. There may be some water lose but it always worked for me. If you are worried you can compare the new (I am assuming that tube worked) and old.

Okay, I have done some more reading and I think I have it... but confirmation would be appreciated. The plastic tube is only there to guide the brass tube directly into the pump housing. Aha .... I feel foolish somewhat.

Thanks Thumpar, we were both typing at the same time. I can't compare the old one very well as it was heat damaged by the lack of water from a toasted impellor. Bad story, brand new engine rebuild, tuning on muffs, friend blips throttle plate to rev engine, throttle gets locked by incorrectly installed idle cam, engine races (on muffs), I race to shut off ignition. Impellor gets massacred. Don't realize water pump is toasted, go for sea trial, engine runs hot, gets shut down before overheat, but does run for 10 minutes without water pump flow to cool. Boo hiss not a good story. Need to pull heat exchanger to check for debris and try again.

Yep, it's only a guide tube.

I put a touch of silicone on it, to hold it in place on the pump housing. (Just a touch of silicone, so the tube can be removed if needed.)

Sangster, one of the take home messages from Chris video for you is check the water pocket cover for heat damage. Also you should check to see if you fried the flappers.

Heat exchanger? If it is a 470 engine, better do a compression check, just to make sure you did not damage the head gasket.

Thank you all for the input... it is an I6 not the I4. I sure hope there is no head issues - I did shut off before it hit 250 degrees. I did look up with a flashlight and the water pocket cover appears to be in good shape and not distorted.

Yeah the 6 is a lot more forgiving. Couldn't hurt though. As 84ed suggested I would check the exhaust shutter, if you did damage to the pump housing, you could have burned off the shutter.

The pump housing did not seem like it got damaged from exhaust heat, more from the molten impeller... I just thought it wise to replace the whole shebang while I had it apart. The exhaust shutter is long gone, at least it was gone when I got to the boat.

I also ran an inline 6 for many years without an exhaust shutter.. ;)

Re: MC1 water pump install question

What do you think Achris, should I look around to see if I can source a shutter to install? I did a bit of digging around and it seems likely to be able to get one to fit the old rig. I would hate to go to the lengths I have already, only to swallow a mouthful of water and prang the engine.
By the way, this is a lot more interesting reading/writing than what I am currently supposed to be doing.... writing a lit review on the effects of class size on student achievement. I am a shop teacher doing a masters degree - hard to find qualitative studies that relate to industrial ed in high school classes .... which is why I am working on the aforementioned topic rather than something of considerably greater interest. OKAY .... back to work.

Next time you have the exhaust elbow off for inspection, put a new shutter in.. They are still available, part# -45586...
