carb finished last night, thanks for the help. on to the water pump. QD20 10hp. got new grommet, o rings, impeller, gasket, and SEAL (2)-seal is the same part number as the one which will be going on the propshaft.
water pump assembly has a bearing housing with a gasket underneath and a seal inside. how does one get the seal out? a "seal puller" i assume. any safe way to get these out without buying another tool-if not where can i get one. same procedure on propshaft? last, which way does the seal go? it has a side with rubber all the way to the top of the seal and tapers in as it goes down, and a side with a "gap" between the rubber and the metal end.
also, what should the bronze bearing in the housing look like-it sure don't look as good as the center crankshaft journal one in my block. the driveshaft did turn easily with no play though. would this bearing housing have come with the more expensive full waterpump? hindsight anyway.

one last comment, i really apologize for the number of posts and you guys have been most helpful. i DO HAVE a factory manual and must say that i am most disappointed in it. it covers about 20 years and 8-10 models. info is scattered all over the thing with no respect to models or years. i was expecting something more on the lines of a factory repair manual that i have had on my last 3 automobiles that are model and year specific-they blow this thing away. i feel somewhat like an incompetent moron as i am pretty good with cars.

I'm not going to try to chase down your posts but as for the manual I doubt that you have the OMC manual. They are excellent and are very secific with diagrams. If you have difficulty in using an OMC shop manual you should recognize that perhaps trying to fix outboards is not in the cards for you. You can get OMC manuals at several sites. I got mine here:

http://www.theoutboardwizard.bizhosting.com/parts_service_and_owners_manuals.html

sir, i appreciate your apparently meaningful commentary. however, this manual was purchased from ken cook publications, who i currently believe has exclusive rights on reproduction of OMC literature and should be from where all currently available material comes. i thought that this board was for help, and again appreciate any assistance anyone has given to date. it is indeed my first outboard teardown. i have, however, done quite well with cars. if you would like to see a COMPLETE factory manual, check out one for a chrysler minivan or a helms for an acura.
now if you are saying that OMC has distributed YEAR specific and MODEL SPECIFIC detailed repair manuals, perhaps i was indeed sent the wrong manual-however i doubt it. i'll figure it out on my own, thank you.
