I am stumped. My cowl on my mercury outboard says its a Model 800 and the serial number is 1460796. It is close to a 1963 Model 850 but not quit there. I just bought the boat and look forward to restoring it but a little help would be much appreciated. It needs tune up, I have started it with electric start and pull start. It runs as long as you dont try and move lol. Until tune up is complete, I am sitting still. Although I got it to plane out one is has major miss. And if it helps it has reverse. Also says Full Gear Shift on side of upper unit (if that is what it is called). The pictures I have seen show similar motors being solid white with exception of cowl. Mine is all black with silver cowl?!? Does anyone know what year it could be?

Thanks

My guess is a 1962/63 800 (80hp) Full Gear Shift. Black models started around
1965 I think.

Thanks. I am wondering if they didn't paint the motor.?. Its so close to the 63 model 850 serial numbers. Guess I will find out for sure when I take it to shop and try to get parts.

Whats the colour under the cowl? IF it was painted, I doubt they did both sides of the shell

Re: Me=dummy...HELP

The inside of upper and lower cowl are just mill finish (gray looking), no paint on the inside. The outside of the cowls are black and the middle cowl is all Silver (wanna be chrome), with the only mercury decal being on the front of the middle piece that locks in hiding the clamps for middle cowl.

Re: Me=dummy...HELP

post some photos - exterior and interior w/ cowling removed.

I don't know how the cowlings changed from year to year back then, but it's fairly common to replace cowlings with other years and HP's if the original gets damaged or lost... or w/ rebuild/franken-motor projects.

Re: Me=dummy...HELP

I just got back home, the lower unit was green. They painted it, just scratched little off and there it was. It is definitely Kiekhaefer Mercury (posting pic now to same link in earlier post). Got her to send me pics so I didn't know for sure. Don't know if I mentioned it in first post but it does have reverse. And it is a six cylinder. I am still looking for the year.? This is the year that they changed to a harness setup or someone in the past has changed it over. It also has the two little shocks on the side to help lift it since the lack of tilt and trim exist. Now just have to find some parts.....

Re: Me=dummy...HELP

Well I know why it would not start with the key, the last owner had jb welded the ground bolt back to the starter. Anyone know where I could find one for some what reasonable price?

Thanks

Re: Me=dummy...HELP

Ok new question since I have figured out most of the problems. Had the ground on stater JB welded, fell off when I tryed to take stater off lol. I have it starting but no peeing. I was wondering if it has pee hole under the power head as do all other motors I have dealt with or does it come out with exhaust hole on the back of motor? I have also never seen an exhaust hole like this motor. Its rectangular about four inches below the power head.

Thanks

Yes there is a pee hole, port side, right where the bottom leg and cowl meet. Dosen't look like one, till they pee. Mine was cloged too, I didn't realize that, then sudenly, while I taking it out on a short run, to see how the link and sync went, it started to pee. Guess I got lucky, since it din't seem to damage anything.
