Do you include the drive when measuring boat length or do you just measure from front to back of the hull?

Re: measuring boat length

From bow to transom is the usual way that most of us use. The manufacturers can be a different story, however. Some use the pulpit at the bow as [if it has one] as part of the length, for example. Others, you can't figure out how they measured it.

Re: measuring boat length

I don't believe there are any guidelines on how a manufacturer is to measure and designate a boat. They can call it whatever they want. Kind of stupid but who would have thought that someone would want to call a 25ft boat a 22ft or vice versa.

But they do.

Re: measuring boat length

I think some measure the length of the footprint in the water whereas others measure the absolute length of the boat - they can differ markedly.

From tip to stern is common. Out drive is not included.

Re: measuring boat length

Pointer - think insurance cost per foot. Also, slip rental cost per foot. In this case, shorter is better. :)

This is my experience: for gov't purposes, measure from the furthest part of the hull at the bow to the furthest part of the hull at the stern. Same going port to stb for beam. Some states and marinas will include swim platforms in LOA if molded into the hull, but not if attached. Same for anchoring goodies on the bow; platforms that are molded to the hull count, attached goodies (railings, anchor rollers, etc) don’t count, except they can for slip rentals because they don't want it hanging over the docks. The drive system never counts, but rudders do if they exceed the hull length (never seen it). Fenders, bumpers, etc that are permanently attached to the hull count for insurance and slip rental, but not for gov’t stuff.

Re: measuring boat length

Some manufacturers use rulers with only 10 or 11 inches to the foot to meaasure their boats.

Re: measuring boat length

A marina is going to measure drive to bow roller ie; the length of the dock your boat occupies.
