im currently in the process of changing over from rank and pinion steering to a rotary system. i measured my cable and was not sure if i should measure the cable as well as the metal rod on the end that goes through the trim on the motor. also, there is a lag bolt where the rod on the steering cable goes and it is painted the same color as the motor 71 evinrude. jut out of curiosity, why is it there and would the cable go anywhere else?

Steering cables are generally measured from 'nut to nut' basically on the outside sheath length is counted. Find the part number on your current cable and cross reference on Teleflex's website.

Post a picture. What its doing there depends allot on what vintage of engine and how the steering is attached, etc.
