Talk about some jerry-rigging... the PO of this boat I'm working on apparently had problems with the factory mechanical fuel pump because the lines on it are capped off and, get this, he installed an aftermarket auto fuel pump inline onto the transom, then put an inline fuel filter right after that just hanging on the fuel line!! AND... the pump comes on whenever the IGN key is ON, all the time!
Well... this just isn't going to fly of course.
So now I'm trying to figure out which would be more practical... repair the mech. fuel pump (preferred), OR find an oil pressure switch and marine elec. fuel pump. I already have a water filter/separator coming so that's no issue. I've read that these fuel pumps can be repaired with a kit that includes the seals and diaphragm, but I'm having a heck of a time finding it. Any ideas where I can find it? I would like to repair the mech. pump because 1) less parts so it's gotta be more reliable, and 2) hopefully a kit would cheaper (what's cheap about a boat, right?) than buying new pump.... Any thoughts.. ?
Btw, the pump is the Carter Low-Volume model, with the bowl on top.
Thanks!!
Daniel
