Hey!!!
I have a 1997 Mer 5.7LX bravo III. I have been encountering really hard, slow, sometimes long starts, but once running fine “issues.” If the engine fires up on the first key turn, while cold its fine, but if not it takes forever. (Similar to a weak bat, however I T.S. all the oblivious,(coil, starter, bat, wires, ing, plugs….) so had to asked my mechanic to have a peek.

This is where it gets weird-
He advised – When turning off the engine, the timing is somehow advancing, rather then stopping, resulting in slow starts. He then added, if you start the engine, then turn it off, then unplug the knock module it starts fine….( Iam guessing that somehow resets the icm/timing?) However if you don't unplug the KM same thing happens. So he replaced the knock module thinking it went bad. Until after he installed it, it continued having the same problem…. Than he replied with- "I have never seen this and need to call merc for assistance." Its been over a week and no fix yet.

I am just bummed and trying to get some other thoughts.

Cheers

That answer is a stretch,I`d be checking for water in a cylinder(s) when it happens.
How old are the manifolds and risers?

My Thoughts Exactly about being s t r e t c h. However mech/marina owner is one man band and has been in business for over 28 years. That's the reason why i like him. Live and die by your own hand.... Manifold and risers 1 year old.
