Besides the diaphram, what can go bad or make these things not work properly. Its the last option I have to figure out why my engine keeps stalling out when coming back to neutral from a w.o.t run.

it takes more fuel to go wot than to idle.so it doesnt seem likely that its the problem.

It sounds like the switch is doing exactly what it's supposed to do but 'something' is causing the forked plate to stay in the stressed postion even after you have shifted into neutral.

The switch is only supposed to momentarily short the ignition out so the dog clutch unloads enabling it to disengage.

You need to be on the water to check it as the prop has to be loaded to make it all work.

First off what we working on??? Profile?
If it's a Mercruiser I'd say the shift cable is old/corroded.
The idle set too low.

Re: Mechanical fuel pump, what can go bad

it is a 305 5.0L V8 with an Alpha I. I gave it a complete tune up; coil, rotor/cap, plugs/wires, fuel filter/seperator, clean the fuel tank, and I have had the carb rebuilt which is a 2bbl merccarb. Now the when I come back to nuetral there is fuel coming out of the float vent and flooding the motor. It seems as the spring loaded needle for the float is not seating good or the fuel pump is pumping too much fuel to where it pushes on the needle.
I find it hard to believe it has to do nuetral switch when I am not even putting it in gear while testing it on the muffs.

Got it fixed, turns out the float needed reset in the carb. The needle wasnt seating tight and fuel was overflowing from the float vent and flooding the carb. She runs great now.
Thanks for all the help.
