Re: mecury 25hp 1992 free spinning
The water flow pressure from the forward movement of the boat will hit the back of the prop blades as cause the prop to move as if it were turning as it would in FWD. This is why Mercury designed the clutch dog as such. Otherwise the prop would be some what of a brake when the motor is shut down from WOT to idle, and would have a tendency to throw the people and contents in the boat forward. This and the water would want to come over the transom and into the boat more so on a fast shutdown. When towing a boat as such, it is my practices to put the control in the REV position so the air flow can not turn the prop at all, thus causing unneeded ware to the bearings and/or the clutch dog.Next time when following a boat down the highway, look at the prop and you will be able to see what happens if the motor is in NUT or FWD gear when being towed. Works the same way when in the water. Place the control in NUT and the clicking will stop.
