I have an older mercury 85hp motor 70's I think. I had it running last year fine. This year I wanted to replace the throttle cables. I put new ones on but could't get the adjustments right. Put the old ones back on and it will go into forward and reverse. Forward the motor doesn't throttle up but in reverse it does. Is there some literature on how to adjust these cables any place. My manual only talks about the carb adjustments

Thanks

Re: Mecury 85 hp throttle issues.

Is it possible that you accidentally switched the throttle and shift cables when you hooked them back up? If you have the standard "Mercontrol" remote control box, the cable on the starboard (right) side leaving the control box should connect to your throttle arm at the motor (top cable). Port side cable at remote control box goes to the shift linkage at motor (bottom cable). Trace each cable back to the motor to be sure this is the case. As far as adjustment goes, threading the brass barrel nut in or out to maintain neutral gear selection when remote control arm is in neutral position. Throttle should be adjusted so that there is slight pressure against your idle stop on the throttle arm also while control arm is in the neutral position.

Hope that helps and good luck!
