Anyone know a decent medical forum?
Evidently, there are a million out there.
I started checking a few out, but it looks like most have more questions than answers.
I relatively sure I fractured a rib.
My primary care quack is closed on weekends. Even if he were, I would have to go running around town to get a picture, back to his office, then to whatever specialist he sent me to (if open). Doesn't seem like a serious enough thing to go to an emergency room (?), not to mention waiting 6 hours to be seen. I know the only thing that can be done is rest and meds.
Definitely gonna need some pain killers though.
I figured I could check some forums to help me make a decision.

You guys are gonna hate me if I have to sit in front of this computer for 3-6 weeks! Having my full and undivided attention is generally not a good thing!:)

I don't want to tell you what to do and I hope you recover quickly, but I think you should see a doctor.

If it's broken instead of just fractured, it's not hard to puncture a lung and then it'll be a real emergency.

You need a x-ray pronto. You spitting blood?

Coughing blood?

Boy scouts on the web site has medical forms.

This could turn bad quick if you collapse a lung.

Sorry about you pain, i had it and it ain't fun.

Get well soon my friend, we will be seeing you alot more here.

PS more like six weeks.

Owie.

Go to an urgent care clinic, they can x-ray and give you a prescription.

No blood. It's nowhere near that bad.
I have full intentions of getting a picture...just trying to figure out how to do it without taking all day in a waiting room...and visit some forums to get an idea what I'm in for.
You can't really do anything for a fractured rib anywho.
I fell backwards last weekend with an arm load of firewood- not hard - not even a bruise. It almost seemed like slow motion. But I landed on the spot where it hurts.
Several hours later I felt sore - just figured it was a muscle thing. I had been splitting and stacking wood, working on a table in the woodshop, stowing boxes, and some other moderate work. Went all week - not too bad except after I carried an armful of wood in would be sore afterwards.
This morning when I woke up the pain was almost intolerable - breathing, standing, coughing...I did a little googling and discovered one symptom that pushed it over the edge. If I push on my ribcage in front - it hurts around back where I landed. I have a high threshold for pain. So if something hurts, I know it's not good.
I figured I've aggravated it by carrying arm loads of firewood.
I would put as much as I could carry in that arm.

Re: medical forum recommendation

Just called the Dr. office - closed with a useless recording.
Urgent care might be a better option than the emergency room...I'll have to check the phone book to see what's in my area.
good suggestion
thanks

outside of pediatrics, there's only one urgent care place. I know for a fact they don't have radiology equipment and they are not a 24/7 operation.

Looks like I better get dressed and head to #$@!!$ ER.

Breaking a rib is hard and bruising a rib is more common. Get the xray. Sadly, the treatment for a cracked rib (or bruised) is time to heal. The xray will make sure it does not have a sharp edge that is threatening other body parts.

I can feel your pain.... it's hard to take a breath!...... you will probably be wrapped....... ask for the red and green ace bandage (Christmas is coming you know:) ) see you can still smile...... it probably hurts when you laugh.

Get checked now.

Always best to have it checked out, your going to half to get the doc to prescribe your meds anyway. I've learned to go to the ER, thought I broke my wrist after making a delivery at one job, turned out I had tendinitis which made my wrist swell up and hurt bad. I've had other more serious incidents besides the wrist. Dang my ribs are hurting just thinking of your pain.

Hope ya recover quickly and get back to your normal self.

Oh as far as a medical forum ...... we could put a simple sticky up titled "Your getting older... Get used to it!" and it would not require any posts!! :D

I'm some-what of a broken bone expert, riding and racing motocross for 20 years will do that to ya.....lol.

Having a broken rib hurts, but normally you can roll around until you find a spot that it doesn't hurt. A dislocated rib hurts worse and pretty much has no relief. If its dislocated, it may require surgery.

Just thank heavens you don't have a kidney stone, thats real pain!

You ain't a kiddin'. I should have known better....you guys should have woken up earlier though. There's always someone out there that knows...probably why I came here this morning.
Well, it was extremely light in the ER so I got right in - this was my biggest fear, having to wait all darn day.
Anywho, I talked to the doc about my activities over the past week. I told him I fell, landed on my back and have been carrying armloads of wood all week (using my left arm only). They took pictures and a urine sample.
They didn't find any fractures. A kidney stone was an option since the pain coincided with the left kidney, but that didn't show on the xray either. I've had a stone before and while painful, nausea accompanied that - so they ruled that out. He asked me about twice after not finding anything. No blood in the urine - in case they did find a fracture. He didn't think was a bruised kidney either. So that left something muscular. I'd believe a tendon, but not a muscle - never had a muscle cause acute pain which was very similar to a kidney stone btw, soreness - yeah. They gave me some pain killers which will get me thought he weekend and told me not to lift anything. This is going to be tough for me. I needed to split more wood this weekend and maybe start Xmas shopping, gotta move boxes around - so much to do. The drugs have kicked in so I'm feeling pretty comfy...maybe I'll call in to work CDS and do the Xmas shopping if the pills hold out.:)
I think for the rest of the weekend, I'll just curl up in front of the fireplace and keep an eye on you guys.:D
Somebody's gotta keep an eye on our new mod - I noticed Bob performed what was probably his first mod thing this morning - moving a post to a different area.

Glad to see it's nothing major. I use WEBMD site to "diagnose" minor things to see if I should be worried. Then hours later the Mrs. often forces me into seeing the professionals. She's probably right, but I try to avoid the white coats too! Feel better

LOL.
You sound like my Chiropractor.
He's a better GP than my GP. So I slide little things past him...they're always age related.

You need to call in a few favors. DO NOT TAKE PAIN KILLERS AND SPLIT WOOD...... bad idea. You could be not as sharp or drowsey AND you could end up feeing so good you do further damage to the unknown!

I am not an MD; however, I am the Environmental, Health and safety guy at work, and we get our guidance from a major Corporation, who has an MD.
You did right in consulting with a Doc. The Doc has the traning and the equipment to diagnose injuries, and, (this is a biggie) he is able to look at it, read Xrays, and diagnose it.
Can't be done over the web.
For general info, I use webmd myself, but I limit this to medication info.
Hey have a good Xmas..

That's about where I'm at now with 5mg Oxycodone.
I keep wondering if they missed something on the xray. They took 7 pictures. The worst malady I can recall muscle related was shin splints...nowhere near as bad.
