Just wanted to remind everyone to not ignore any new or growing existing skin blemishes. I have just had 2 Basal cell, and 1 Melanoma removed. I checked the FACs and found an old post and reply from Thejeffski who told me to have a freckle checked. I set an appointment then and waited an hour and 20 mins to have mine and 2 others in the waiting room appointments cancelled because the doc had an emergency that day, and I never returned. I asked my MD about the freckel a month or so later, for an unrelated visit, and he said it was just an ageing spot. Flash foreward to a month or so ago I went to another dematologist to have them look at a small pink spot on my wrist that would not go away and turned out to be a Basal cell. They also found the aforementioned "freckel" was a Melanoma after biopsies on 3 spots ( another Basal also ). I was worried about the freckel that had been on my leg for at least 6 years and slowly getting larger and the cancer being in further stages allready. I found out yesterday that the margins were good and I should be OK as it was in an early stage. PLEASE use good sunscreen, hats, longsleeves, biminis, whatever to protect yourself from the sun. I worked outside daily for 25 yrs and did'nt take alot of precaution until the last 10 or so. You can find lots of examples to compare spots you may have to real pics of various types of SC online, but a trip to a Dermatologist is a small price to pay compared to ignorance as I apparently almost found out the hard way.

Re: Melanomas

Glad you got it. A friend of mine died of melanoma last year at the age of 72. He got some years, but could have used a few more.

I'm a light skinned Irishman and burn like crazy. I started using sun screen religiously about 1978, but the damage was done by then. No skin cancers so far, but I go to the dermatologist about every 3 years or so and have a few more spots frozen off.

Re: Melanomas

Good post and strikes close to my heart! Last year my best friend has had a mole looking bump (for the lack of a better word) on his thumb we kept telling him to get it checked out and he finally did it was mellanoma and by the time the Cleveland clinic biopsy came back it was in early stage 4 and into the lymph noids. luckily the only treatment was an experimental (imppy) and it was only being used on 10 paitients in the country and once again after 6 cylcles of this treatment and numerous visits it has consistanly shrank the cancer to more than 3/4 it's original measured size and still shrinking! As I said earlier its struck close to my heart because this was my Dad and believe me losing him would be devastating to me I believe one of the only times I have cried was when the doctor said he had 30% chance of surviving this. But right now Dad is the case syudy for this drug being reviewed by the FDA and the doc is eating his estimate prediction. Pay atteition to all the abnormalties and growths because believe me it's a scary ordeal when you are faced with what I was. I do not want to be haunted by my Dads memory for some time I enjoy every second with him!
