Merc 1 prop shaft seal removal??

I have a 1967 Merc 1 outdrive for my 110Hp Mercruiser. I have removed the prop and am left scratching my head as to how to remove the prop shaft oil seal. It is pressed in there pretty good.

Actually, theres 2 in there.back to back.Best way is to pull the carrier.

I figured as much as my seal kit had 2 of them. It looks as though there is an outer ring that needs to be removed using a spanner wrench then the carrier will come out. Is this right? I tried reading through my manual but it doesn't have very good instructions....

Is there another way of removing the ring without a spanner wrench? (I know about bending the tabs first)
