Do you know year and/or model #? What size boat is it on? Have you had it out on the water yourself or just run in driveway w/ muffs? I have a 1988 Merc 100. Did a lot of work on it last year. May have some ideas if I know more about your motor.

Hello Mr. Lundt thanks a lot for the reply I took a look at the motor and I couldn't find the year it was built but I did find the serial # which is 2681555.

We haven't taken it out yet but we did run the motor with muffs it actually started up pretty easy. It did backfire once but after that it ran flawlessly. It sounded nice :)

Heres some photos of the motor so you can get a better idea of what we're working with here.

So does anyone know where to get some of those wires used in the motor? Are they all the same wires or different?

Thanks for the pics. This definitely is not my motor. According to oldmercs.com you have a 1969 model (Serial numbers 2484633 thru 2836018 were 1969 models). Hopefully this link: http://www.eastcoastmarineservice.com/196869merc1000.htm will take you to the page I found. At the bottom there is a list of some of the items that the site sells including owners manuals, wiring harnesses, etc. You might be able to find what you need there. After you get the part number you can google that number and see if anyone else sells it and compare prices. Might as well get a manual while you're at it!

As for your problem, sounds like you're only getting a few cylinders to work for you. My problem was fuel until I cleaned the carbs in chem-dip. If you are getting fuel, you may not be getting spark. I'd pull the plugs and check them for spark while someone cranks the engine. Wires look like they need replaced anyway but that may not be your problem.

Good luck, have fun with your project and keep us posted.

have the same motor those wires are for the rectifier to charge your battery[will not stop motor running] need replacing ignition wire will do any auto store, color up to you pays to have same color as further down the road you have to sort out wires again.power problem sounds like carbys or fuel pump supply ps that outfit should do 35 mph + mine does. old mercs .com have wire dia.
