Good Day!
So I bought a boat last night with a Merc 1000 SS on it. The motor runs but leaks a little gas somewhere. I called a couple of outboard shops and a couple of marina's up here in MN to see about getting it checked up, cleaned up, gas leak looked into, etc. A couple of the people on the phone stated, plain and simply: "Your going to get a lesson on owning that motor. That motor is very expensive to work on, parts, etc. I (this is the person on the phone now remember) would NEVER own one and you will regret it.." Scared the CRAP out of me! Should I be THIS worried about owning this motor?
I went out and bought the boat because it was VERY reasonably priced, in good working order, the motor worked (tilt doesnt although trim does....), and I could afford it. Now Im starting to think I was an idiot....I hope not!
IS this Merc that expensive to maintain?
How much can / should I expect to get it looked over for issues or things that need to be addressed and tuned so that I know its running as best as possible?
Maybe the people on the phone are just trying to get me scared. I expect to pay a little more than for like an 80's or 90's motor but not so much that I shouldnt just go buy a different one...
ACK!
