Can someone tell me what tools are needed to remove the flywheel on my 1986 inline 6. I need to inspect the stator and trigger assembly.

A 15/16s socket and flywheel puller to remove it and a torque wrench to install the flywheel, I am quite sure someone will come on and tell you to remove the hub bolts anytime now.

The flywheel puller threads into the flywheel. Don't try to use a hook type puller. It will only do damage. And don't take any bolts out of the flywheel except the one on the crankshaft.

Pullers are available on eBay. Most are homemade. The ones with fine thread push bolts are best, the coarse thread ones struggle. Don't worry about the engine lifting ring, you can always use a fine thread bolt and a piece of chain.

hope it helps

I used a steering wheel puller that I bought at Advance Auto Partsfor bout $7, I did it the wrong way to start with by removing the 8 bolts holding the hub to the flywheel easier to do it correct the first time

Even with a puller those flywheels can be a pain. Have a rubber mallet on hand two "gently" bump the wheel as you use the puller. Upon reassembling the wheel it's a great idea to put a little never-cease on the shaft. Always use a torque wrench and torque to manufacturers specs.

This is the proper tool. It does not require hammering, and it will not damage the flex plate, as all the other methods discussed here will. It's about 20 bucks on eBay. 40 from Murkery.
hope it helps
