Merc 1150 cracked lower unit WELD IT??

I have a nice running Merc inline 115 with a hairline crack in the leading edge of the lower unit, It is about 3 1/2 inches long, just enough to let water in, and oil out. I want to try to remove the paint from the affected area and run a bead of aluminum weld to fill this crack, Has anyone dealt with minor lower unit crack repairs? Better way to repair? Please help a poor boy out. Love my Merc, just dont wanna spent a ton on a new lower unit because of a small crack. Thanks in advance - Bob

i had one like that removed guts and had it welded worked good, back the JB weld wasnt around,you may try Jb weld without removing the guts,nothing to lose by trying
