Thanks in advance for the help. Here is the issue...

'74 merc 1150 s/n 3944682
single solenoid trim unit

Trim motor would run when down button was pushed, solenoid would click when up button pushed. motor would trim up if power was applied directly to solenoid terminal with blue wire. Faulty solenoid right???
Replaced solenoid and now have no response from trim switch in either direction (no clicking no trim motor running) The new solenoid from Sierra did not have a mounting bracket and I simply reconnected wires to terminals to test. Does the solenoid ground through the bracket?
Sorry for the basic question but my manual does not have a wire diagram for the T/T unit.

Re: Merc 1150 Tilt/Trim prob

seanik,

I was just about to post this same topic, as I am having problems with getting my tilt/trim wired back right.
I have a 1972 Merc 1150, so I am sure we have the kind of trim unit.
On my motor, the solenoid has 2 small lugs on the front, and 2 big ones, one on each side. I only have one solenoid on my unit, where I have seen some units with 2.

On the small right front prong facing you is where you put the motor ground and a ground wire to the -neg of the battery.

I have the Mercury service manual that has the wiring diagram if I can help you out.

Re: Merc 1150 Tilt/Trim prob

Okay, now for my problem. I am trying to get my trim unit wired back right. I have the motor and solenoid hooked up right. The guy before me had the two trim sender wires (blue & purple) hooked together with a jumper wire, which had another wire jumped off of that. He has so many wires spliced everywhere I don't know what he was thinking.
From the plug that leaves the trim unit there are these wires (red, blue, green), then coming out of the harness is the two sender wires (blue & purple) where I put them on a small toggle switch.
Now there are 3 wires coming from the trim/tilt buttons on my shifter, (purple, green, blue).

I have 4 wires coming from the trim motor going to 3 wires from the switch.

I know green=green, blue=blue, red to purple, red and purple going to purple? I have tried a couple combinations and used the volt meter but still just get a clicking solenoid.

The schematic gets confusing where the wires go to the trim buttons.

Anybody know what I am doing wrong? By the way, when I check voltage on the green=green and pushing the down button, I only get around 6-7 volts. Is this right? On the blue=blue and the red I get +12 volts.

Confused!

Re: Merc 1150 Tilt/Trim prob

I think I may have a low battery. My motor is tilted up and needs to be tilted down, and when I check voltage hitting the up switch I get over 11 volts, but when I hit the switch to go down I only get about 7 volts.
So I am charging the battery and hoping that is the problem.

Replacement solenoid from Sierra is part # 18-5808. It has 4 terminals connected as follows:

large terminal on left - 2 red wires one from battery on from switch
large terminal on right - blue wire from trim motor
small terminal on top right - 2 black on to battrery on to trim motor
small terminal on top left - green wire

Boat is at lake 4hrs away so this is the best I can do from memeory but hopefully this helps in the diagnosis.

The small terminal on top left should be a small blue wire. The other wires are correct.

The GREEN wires from the motor and plug connect together without going through the solenoid. On my wiring diagram it says connect to terminal block, but I am not sure what that means. I just have them connected together.

Where do you have the GREEN wire from the MOTOR connected?

Re: Merc 1150 Tilt/Trim prob

Green wire from motor is connected to a terminal block on the pump reservoir close to where the mounting bracket from the original solenoid screwed down.

I can not recall exactly where the green wire I have connected to the top terminal comes from but I believe it is from the harness which comes from the plug from the main harness. In any event this is how it was connected before the solenoid went bad.
