hi. 1977 merc 115 hp I6 was sitting in a dudes garage since 1985 till i got it in april 2004, had not been ran since 1985. i rebuilt carbs, replaced water pump and some misc ignition parts and wires... but the one item i did that showed the most improvement... I DECARBED IT....
7.99 and you too can get a can of decarb spray from boaters world. i sprayed some in the carbs, and put the rest in about 1/4 gallon of gas ran it all through at the boat ramp, it smoked out the entire bellair causeway...this was at night, in the morning i ran new gas through it and all this black crud came out and all over my driveway!!!

motor runs like new, serioulsy!!! im not pulling your leg like lubedude here, i own no stock(just playing lubedude :) )

decarb your motor, you WILL see a difference!!!! i can rev it, excellent throttle response, starts instantly! within 1/4 second of turning the key! i couldnt be happier!!!!

m ikey

email me if you want more info

You know, it would be nice to see just how many people that decarbed had the same experience you did. It has to be one of the single most over looked things there is that people never do. Run a good oil (Full Synthetic) and you wont have to do it as often, Heck I dont do it at all now.

OK, PhatmanMike, Im on to ya.

Good to hear about a happy ending! (Decarbing has also helped my motor a great deal.)

How exactly do you decarb the engine? Is it something someone with basic skills and the manual can do or not? My engine doesnt seem to be working up to par and I would be interested in trying this before taking it into the marine shop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Searun1

this is what i did......
step #1 go to store( or marina)
step #2 burchase i can of "motor decarb spray"
step #3, go home
step #4, start motor on muffs or in bucket and let warm up for 5 mins
step #5 spray can of decarb into the carbs while engine is running.
when all is gone, turn off motor and wait 15 mins. restart motor and be ready for a humoungous amount of smoke.... you should see lots of black crud come out the exhaust. my motor is a nite and day difference now and yours should be too......

m ikey

Well I tried out the de-carbing process today. I got some black junk out of the exhaust and a little better idle and one MPH more on the top end. I am sure it was good for the engine but still have not solved the slow acceleration problem. I changed the plugs and gapped them properly as well. Anyone have any ideas?

Searun1

I have not decarbed my 69 Merc 1250, I think about it all the time but I wonder if I really need to. I tickle 6000 rpms, it idles well, and the cylinders are about 120 psi give or take a pound or two. It runs perfect and I worry that if I decarb it may run worse. I know better, but I have a "if it aint broke, don't fix it" mentality with this motor. I have been running WallyTech oil, but I switched to the Penzoil Synth blend, and only have one tank of that ran through the motor. Can't say I have noticed a difference, except less smoke at start-up and idle.

I have rebuilt the carbs in my 50hp Johnson. The motor runs "fine". Is "decarbing" something I should do in addition to rebuilding the carbs?

If a good idea, I'm willing to try it.
