I have a 1988 mercury v135. I purchased the motor used at the end of last season. I ran it once and it ran great. I disconnected the fuel line and ran the motor dry before putting it up for the winter. I put fuel stabilizer in before layup.

I just got it out for the first time and had a problem with it fouling the plugs... right off the bat. It has ngk surface gap plugs in it. I removed the plugs and cleaned them with gumout spray and the motor fired right up and ran strong for a couple of minutes. I trailered it since it was after dark and brought it back out the next day.

Yesterday, I fired the boat up and ran it at about 4200 rpms for about 10 minutes to the far end of the lake. I was on my way back when the motor started to sputter and run rough. It would clear up and then run rough again.

When I got it home, each of the plugs was oily looking and wet. I'm thinking new fuel/plugs. Any ideas or recommendations???? What would be a good plug for this motor. It is in a 16ft ski boat that will see both idling and frequent extended blasts.

Re: merc 135 spark plugs

Sounds like fouled plugs. If you use premix from last year, it will have extra oil due to evaporation of the gas over the winter. Alternatively, if the fuel pump diagram developed a leak, raw fuel will be introduced into the crankcase, possibly causing fouling.

I have been trying to find an alternative to the surface gap plugs for my Merc OB without success. If you do find an alternative, I would like to know.

Thanks for the info. I never considered the evaporation aspect. I have purchased a new set of plugs and am going to drain the tank and start out fresh for this season. We'll see what happens.

I had a Merc 135 on a Searay, the NGK was the best plug i could find. I also had a fuel problem like yours and found that after I rebilt (easy to do)the fuel pump,it ran great.give it a try. :)
