Re: merc 135 temp

I have a 1993 135 that runs hot at idle (up to 190) but cools way down when you are runnig (under 130). Now that it is warm here in the Northeast and I have a prolonged (15min) no wake run in my daily trip I have seen the temp hit 190. It seems high to me but I think these engines run hot.

Any one else have specs on operating temp??

I putt around just above idle alot when trolling and I've only seen the gauge get that hot once.

I'm curious, my tell-tale only has flow after the engine warms up. It never overheats. Does yours have tell tale flow when cold? Is it supposed to?

My 1986 175 hp V6, runs up to about 180-190F at no wake Idle speeds and then climbs up to 210-220F at WOT it will drop back down to 180F when I throttle back down to no wake... It measures metal temps on the cylinder head(s)...

Re: merc 135 temp

I dont believe the 135 is overheating. Buzzers works and never sound, or have sounded. The sending unit is in the head (metal temp I guess). It does not touch water. Telltale is strog and flows soon after startup. I only stated seeing the 190 temps my last 2 trips and I think it is due to ambient air finally warming here in NE.
KCLOST-I have never hit 220 but I thought I saw that the buzzer is triggered by 240?
Metal Temp? Is this higher than the water temp?

Re: merc 135 temp

Yea, metal temperatures of the head will be much higher that the water flowing through the water jackets for the block and heads...

You are measuring metal that is basically just above the combustion chamber...

What I can't understand is how some guys state that they have temperature readings very similar to mine, but others (like yourself) see temps drop down to 130-140F while running. I just don't get why? I know our motors are not of the same year, but why the difference?

My water pressures are excellent, stats good, impeller/pump good, new head gaskets, water jackets clear, poppet is good clean and new, etc.

And yes, these motors (Black Max's) are known for running hot!

This makes me feel better as the motor does run nice.

Re: merc 135 temp

I was actually seeing some pretty high temps this weekend. PRetty much 180-190 idle or high RPM (it should not move around too much without the poppet and thermostats), but our ambient air was 95 and the water temp is up to almost 89. When I'm running in 70 degree water temps I'll run more like 165. Course we won't see those temps until January.

Mack,
This sounds similar and backs up that water and air temp affect operating temp (as one would deduce). By the by that is some hot @ss water you got down there. I am still running in 64 degree water on my no wake run out the harbor with temps of 54-60 on the eastern shore once outside.
TH
