Thanks much for the advise on the timing. I believe I have finally gotten it. My next question is about the throttle cable. When you give it throttle, how far is the handle supposed to go? As it is, my handle only goes to about 10:00. I can't get the throttle shifter to open the carbs all the way. I set timing without the cable connected but I can't seem to make it the throttle open up when I connect the cable to the throttle lever. I've checked and double checked the connections to the throttle arm on motor and the throttle cam. I've adjusted and readjusted, but I can only either get it to idle correctly and have no wide open throttle or I can adjust it to have wide open throttle, but then it will not come back far enough to idle. Hence my question about the control handle to the cable. Is the handle supposed to go all the way horizontal -- ? Because all I get is \. Maybe I'm needing a new throttle cable? But, I really want to know for sure before I go out and buy one. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Possible bend in the throttle cable steel/brass area. Pull it off and check. Should go to 8 clock at least WOT..

Re: merc 140 throttle cable

Well, the throttle cable is good. I adjusted as best I could for wot and idle with the control handle only going to about 10:00. Just for sh*** and giggles I put it in reverse to see how much play was there. Well the throttle handle will go all the way horizontal almost to 8:00. Somehow or other the control handle has been reversed so that when I'm pushing it forward to wot I'm doing it with the reverse side of the control. It goes forward but it's just a very short travel. Does that make sense? Any idea what the easiest way is to correct the control box to make it go forward like normal and the reverse have the shorter shift? And if so how do I get the handle off the control box? It does have power trim/tilt on handle. I just can't seem to get the handle to slide off it's shaft. Otherwise I guess I could run it just like I have, since it's adjusted, but I know it's not correct. It just means I will need to not give wot when I put it in reverse. Thanks again for assistance

as a side note, it turns out I had the throttle cam to the timing screws just a bit too tight. When I loosened that baby the cable moved very smooth and EASY as opposed to the herculean arm strength I had to use to give throttle before.

Re: merc 140 throttle cable

Well, I got the boat on plane this afternoon. First time in 6yrs. I'm waiting for my new fuel pump kit to get here to finish off what I hope will be the end of the job. It's been 6 yrs since it was changed as well, so I'm hoping that it is the cause of why it has intermittent power loss. It would go, but not get up and go. I had to ease the throttle to get it on plane. More often than not however it wouldn't even make it there. The motor wanted to just spit and sputter and shut off if I didn't draw back the throttle slow enough. Are these symptoms of faulty diaphram? I'll know for sure when I get the fuel pump in, but in the meantime, does that intermittent power loss and gain signify fuel pump? Thanks

ps. The controls were all completely out of wack. I had to break down the control box and rebuild it to work properly...what a number someone did on that box!
