I have read a few posts but could not find anything on my motor. Have a merc xr6 150 od224097 grinds when put into f or reverse. the lower unit is brand new. should I shift it faster into gear or ease it or adjust throttle cables. Sometimes it will buck on me like its slipping out of gear when putting it into gear. any help. Also being how the lower unit is new. How often should I change the lower unit oil. The lower unit is new but the boat sat for about 2 years. thanks

what your idle like high idle might cause this check for the idle specs. Oil in the lower unit should be chanced every year. but if you keep grinding them gears you,ll better do it alot sooner. the gears have to sinc together when ingaged and cannot if the shaft is turning too fast this is the only thing i can think of same as any standard transmission but without a clutch your messing the gears lower the idle and try it agian

It does idle a little high the boat mech. said it should idle around 1250 when he replaced the lower end sounds kind of high to me. the says it should idle at 650 725 in forward gear. should refer to the manual or do you have any tips to lower the rpm. should I do this under load and should I use a tach I know some times the tach in the boat is not very accurate thanks

First off, check your cable adjustment. Disconnect the shift cable at the motor, (with the motor OFF) manually shift into Forward, Neutral, Reverse (while turning the prop with your foot) making sure that the unit shifts fully into each gear.

Now compare the cable position to the linkage position to be sure that it is adjusted to align correctly, adjust if required.

Reattach shift cable, turn the prop by hand (or foot) witih the motor OFF while a helper shifts the control to Forward, Neutral, and Reverse, again checking each to ensure full engagement.

NEVER ease the control into gear, the engagement dogs on the gears will hammer like a ratchet, this will cause premature wear of the edges of the engagement dogs/lugs.

Always shift with firm motion completely into the gear position.

And yes you need as tach - otherwise you don't know what the idle rpm is. The reason you experience grinding is because you are sliding the engine into gear. As Larry the Cable Guy would say -- Git 'er done!! Meaning shift with authority. The grinding is the clutch dogs not meshing. That engine should "clunk" when going into gear if you push that lever quickly.

thanks for the help. Will do the steps the cap had to say. the cable does have some play in it at the throttle lever. I will also look at the manual to reduce Idle. Other than that the motor after doing a somewhat overahul on the top end the boat over all is running really well. thanks again
