Hey all so i have a mercury 150 v6 ive tried to adjust the advance and all that i cleaned out the carbs replaced the plugs and the thing will still only idle and barely keep idle wile in gear no more. When i connect the timing light to the right bank's (1,3,5) plug wire the timing light will NOT flash the left bank however will fire. Now if i were to connect the timing light to the coil trigger wire it will fire normal. Also if i pull off the plug wire wile the engine is running a click is heard and a spark is visible ONLY on the Left bank. So i figured the ignition modules are to blame. (both are new) so i swapped the trigger wires and now only the right bank fires. next to rule out any other possibilities i swapped the trigger wires and the stator wires between the ignition modules and observed the results.

I observed that both ignition modules worked properly when connected to the solid set of wires from the stator but didn't work when connected to the striped pair. So i think the stator is giving a weak signal to the ignition modules. This makes sense because the stator is the only part i did not replace and the wires were badly corroded coming out of it and i cleaned them and soldered now leads onto it to make it work again. Now i could easily go buy a new stator and try it but they are very expensive and i would rather not have to do that. Would it work if i were to put jumpers between the ignition modules so the left bank stator wires can power the right bank aswell? i have other mercs that only have one pair coming down to the modules.

Would this be a safe fix? i just dont want to fry my new modules. If they wont fry il go ahead and try it. Thanks for your help!!

Re: Merc 150 ignition problems

Do not attempt to supply both switchboxes with one set of stator leads.

A DVA meter or DVA adaptor for your volt/ohm meter is the best tool to prove your stator good or bad, but from your testing, switching stator leads and spark also switches sides, it is a pretty good indicator that the stator has lost one side output.

Read the announcement at the top of this forum. That's what you just did. Start a new thread.

I would suggest you supply more information. I don't think any of us have crystal balls that work.
