Merc 150 losing power after new ignition switch?

I have just installed a new ignition switch on my Challenger Mark IV, and I did a wire to wire transfer. However, when I charge my battery, and get ready to turn the motor over. The motor tries to turn over and I got it on the water on Sunday, and it ran great just until I was about it hit open water then I lost all my charge to my battery? My gauges all needled out to empty, and the motor wouldn't turn over again. It tried and seemed to have power to it and turn over but wouldn't after my gauges went empty... Meaning all the way to the left.

Do you have any suggestions? Do you think I have a wire touching in my ignition switch install? After the battery charges, and I put the key in it, the gauges show full (gas, etc) but then I try to turn it over and after a few tries they all go to the left...

Please let me know if you can help..

I am unsure where to start looking?

Thanks,

Brook

I would suspect the switch however the ign. does not depend on voltage to operate it's like a magneto and grond out to stop the gauge problem could be switch or wires at the switch

The battery connection you took off while you were changing the ignition switch is dirty. Clean and tighten both battery connections.

hope it helps

Thanks everyone...

I am going to pull the throttle box and check my switch connections again and resolder if needed..

With the switch, if there was a loose connection would it allow the motor to fire and run like it has? Or would this just ground out the gauges?

As far as the battery, I am going to take it to an auto parts store and tested.

Thanks again everyone...

Re: Merc 150 losing power after new ignition switch?

Good day...

I wanted to let you know that I replaced my internal wiring harness, and tried to start her up and it was trying to turn over. It will try, and try but then stops and sounds like the fly wheel just turns? Would this be a fuel problem?

Also, when I put the key in the ignition, the fuel gauges show full, however if I turn it to "ON" or "Start" they go to empty... what might cause this? Would this affect the starting?

Thanks,

Brook

Most ignition systems drop the auxiliary circuit when starting. It's probably normal. Is the kill switch in the up position?

Thanks for the post... but the gauge never "restores" to normal after the motor is started...

Yes, the kill switch is engaged.

Defective ignition switch. Looks like it got "smoked". Be sure your wiring is correct.

The ignition switch is brand new.... the motor starts just fine... the fuel gauge is the only issue.
