Merc 15hp 2-stroke early 90's - water pump sealer?

I'm installing water pump kit. The original one had some rubbery sealer under the water pump base (white plastic).

I can't find any reference to sealer on my cheapo service manual. Is this recommended or will just the gasket be enough? If needed, which sealer should I use?

Gasket should work. Don't remember ever seeing any sealer on these. Some gaskets have a small bead of red sealer made on them.

Thanks CR. I'll try it dry and can re-do it with sealer later if there's a problem.
