Hello Guys - My boat is starting intermittently. A lot of times I clear the "Click" of the relay, but it's not turning over the engine. Then all of the sudden she'll turn over. Do you think this is the relay on the block, or do you think it's in the starter? Any easy tests to diagnose what this might be.

Thanks - Steve

You probably need to replace your starter solenoid contacts. Check the Merc 3.7 manual (adults only) p 4A-8. Good luck.

one area that can be checked somewhat easily is the solenoid on the starter. inside the unit are contacts that can corrode and lose contact. sketch out a wiring to connector screw diagram and remove the solenoid. remove the front cover and check the condition of the bolt end contact surfaces and the contact washer. the bolts can be rotated 180 degrees to give a new surface. reinstall and give it a try.

Thanks for the tips gentlemen. I would have focussed on the smaller starter solenoid, and I already cleaned all the leads on it - so I think the solenoid on the starter is a good place to attack. I am also parting a 165 4 cylinder, so I'm probably gonna steel the solenoid from that engine as it appears much cleaner.
