My first time out in this old "new to me" 1987 Mercruiser 165 4 cyl. gradually heated up to 200 degrees before a hose burst. Got the boat home and pulled the riser off to reveal that the water ports leading to the exuast manifold were really clogged. The local marine store reccommended that I soak both the riser and the exaust manifold in half water and half muratic acid. They have been boiling for four days now like a witches brew. Does this sound like the right process to clean them out? This is a Florida boat and was use in saly water alot I assume. It probably was not flushed as it should have been. It has a 4 inch exchanger and new impeller. Idled fine on muffs, no over heating. Thanks for any imput.

Howdy,

1. Don't listen to the "Marine Store"

2. Go up to the "Adults Only sticky" messages #1 & 2 in this forum and download a service manual for your engine and drive.

3. replace the riser. You're taking a huge risk by using a corroded riser and then dissolving it with acid and running it!!

I am not familiar enough with the 3.7L engine to know if the manifold is also closed cooled or is it just the block?

If it isn't, you shouldn't be trying to "clean" the manifold with acid either!

If either the manifold or riser is corroded enough to cause ANY problem, you NEED to replace them!

After "boiling them like a witches brew" for 4 days, I would only put them in the metal recycle bin! If you try to use them you run the risk of ruining the engine......

Cheers & Welcome to iBoats!!

The holes dont lead from the manifold to the riser, your manifold should have A/f in it.
Sure hope it`s not an aluminum manifold you dunked in acid. The water exit from the heat exchanger goes thru a hose to the side of the riser. If the exaust holes in the riser are clogged ,it`s time for a replacement.
