working on a 1989 searay with a 165 merc r/mr alpha outdrive to sercive the transom (exhaust, u-joint bellows, and replacing gimbal bearing) My buddy may have pulled on the shift cable at the outdrive, causing the cable to go out of adjustment. I have rev. and neutral but not enough to engauge frowards. everything worked fine before the work was started. so I think the problem is just an ajustment issue. I've looked in the forum for the online section that you guy's post for the merc service manule but haven't had any luck. Would you please post the link for me so I can find some new use for my seloc book? Maybe as a wheel chock between the trailer tires?

I doubt you streatched anything that would throw it out of adjustment. You probably didn't get the shift linkage between the drive and the bellhousing in place when the drive was installed.
I would just back the drive off a little and check that the roller is in the slide on the end of the cable.

Ok I backed off the 5/8 nuts peeked in with needle nose.I saw that the cable slide was between the two teeth. It seems like the lack of adjustment is about 1/8 of and inch at the shift shaft. On the new style shift cable locking nut at the bell housing, does the locking nut thread onto the brass shift cable or does it jam the brass shift cable and thread into the bell housing? If it jams onto the brass end of the shift cable and threads into the bell housing it would allow some adjustment or allow a point in the cable to go out of adjustment.
