Merc 170 3.7L - Unhook battery b/f Charging?

When I bought this boat (1989 Wellcraft, mercruiser 3.7L) the owner told me that his mechanic told him to always disconnect the battery before charging it. The boat was getting its charging system fixed/replaced and the mechanic said one of the reasons of failure is charging with battery connected.

Should I always diconnect battery before charging?

You really should not need to charge the cranking battery OR do you have house batterys ?

If charging causes any dammage something is wrong
