merc 1986 4.5 shifting problems

i bought a merc 1986, 4.5 motor. it had issues, like dried gaskets. i took the motor apart, replaced all the gaskets (thanks iboat) and now i cant seem to get the shifter to work right. i have forward and neutral but cannot get into reverse. the shifter worked fine before i regasketed the motor.
