Here is a picture of the timing pointer on my 1987 Merc. 2.5L engine. I'd like to check the timing now that I have installed a Pertronix Ignitor. It appears to have 6 "peaks" and 5 "valleys"

Can I assume that the center "valley" is 0 degrees? And if so, is it 2 degrees from TDC to the first "peak" ?, 4 degrees from TDC to the first "valley" ?, etc?

I'm just guessing at this. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Biz

sand the rust off and you will see the marks are numbered
looks like you have a leaking circ pump. use a mirror and check the weep hole under the pump snout. if its all rusty it leaks.
good luck and keep posting but if you continue to neglect your machine like it looks, your next post will be about timing cover replacement.

Re: Merc. 2.5L, 120 HP Timing Pointer Question

Thanks for the help guys!

I found the timing marks with a little steel wool. I guess I thought there wasn't any numbers on the tab, which is why I didn't look closer in the first place.

I'll keep an eye on the water pump. Timing cover is also a little rusted. Boat is now fresh water only and spends most of it's time on a trailer, so I hope the cover will last a while longer.

Thanks again,

Bizmark
