I just purchased a 1981 Merc 200 with a concealed (panel mount) control box. I am trying to remove the box and motor and install on another boat. I've removed 8 screws on the outside portion of the box (the part close to the driver). However, I can't figure out how to get the handle loose to seperate the units apart. Any ideas?????

On the backside of the box there is a bolt into the control arm center. Take out the bolt, stick a punch that is smaller diameter than the bolt into the bolt hole and give it a good rap with a hammer. The control arm will come out and you can split the box then.

Walker, thanks I'll give it a try.

I have looked extensively at the back of the box, but have not seen a bolt. As you know, there is very little space to see. (crane the next sideways!) I did take loose a metal and plastic cover on the back.

I take another look,

Thanks again!!,

Rick

I tried again tonight to get the control box apart. Still can't find any bolt. I did see a red plastic cap. Actually, I pried on it and found out that it is a bushing. It appears that the control is pressed together. It has me stumped!

Sure could use some help!!!! I haven't gotten a book yet, but am going to try and find one soon. Would a breakdown of the box be in the book???

Thanks for any help!!

FYI -

The shift lever and box has a small opening at the bottom which has a set screw in it. The lever must be in neutral to access the screw.

Rick
