Can anyone tell me how to properly test the stater and the coils in my Mercury 20hp. The last time i ran it, it started spitting and sputtering, like it was out of gas, then died, When im cranking it, i get a small put after i quit cranking it. Or if im pulling it, its the same, just a backfire and thats it.

Thanks in advance.

The problem is probably the insulator blocks for the points but heres the ignition test.

Re: Merc 200 20hp testing stator help.

Thanks for the guide, It turned out my points were heavly coroded. I got spark, agian. now i just got fuel issues. Is the carb on this thing suppose to push out the excess fuel at the top of the bowl where the fuel line enters, Theres a small hole there it pushes out. Im just wondering if there is a diapham or something bad. I had it apart several times, and cant find anything wrong. or hopefully i got it back together right.

If there is fuel coming out the vent hole the inlet is sticking, the best thing to do is remove the carb and clean it

Re: Merc 200 20hp testing stator help.

Its only coming out when im squeezing the primer bulb. which would force the float open, I just tore the carp apart and cleaned everything out, ill give it another try tommorrow. i just need to make up a new gasket for the flange to the motor.
If anyone has a good parts list that show all the parts, i would greatly appreaciate it. My Carb is a KA.25P, Is there a newer carb available that i could illiminate the fuel pump. Its working ok for now, but its just something else that could go wrong.
This motor is really disapointing me. I got it on a trade for a gun, and the first day on the water it started on the first pull every time, until about 2 hrs later, and it died. i got tired of pulling it to troublshoot it, and stumbled onto a rate electric starter for it.
I cant thank you enough for all your advise, but do you have the info on how to properly set up the timing?
Where can i get a good service and parts manual for it. from what ive found on the net, i believe its a 1970.
