Merc 200 Black Max good motor?

My brother is considering buying a 78 Checkmate with a 78 200 Black Max. Are they a good motor? What year did they start making the black max? Anything in particular to watch out for? Any info is appreciated. Thanks to all! Cheers.

G'ay. They were a very good motor, If it has been used much in salt water I would be carefull, look out for corrosion. Other than that they were prety bulletproof. The Merc V6 was first brought out in 1976 and has been pretty reliable ever since. What you have to note is that the motor is 24 Years old. Any mechanical thing that old can have problems.

Thanks, I know that with anything that old , you can expect to have some issues related to its mechanical fitness. Just needed some input as I know little about Mercs.
