Hello,
I have a 1968 Merc 200 and want to put a stainless steel drive shaft in it.
I've read that Mercury changed to s/s shafts in or about 1975.

My question is, is the drive shaft the same in a 40 hp Merc as the Merc 200?
I have a line on a couple of cheap ones and I'm hoping the parts are the same as long as the shaft lenght is the same.

Thanks for looking and any insight you might have.

Thanks
Mark

Nope ...totally different shaft, try finding a 1978 and back 20 hp shaft to fix your engine. If its rusted or grooved where seals run install a speedy sleeve or have welded up and ground down and polished.

Thanks Faztbullet!
Yeah, it's corroded right at the w/p seals.
I tried the JB weld but its still getting water in the lower gears.
I'll get it welded and turned this winter.
