I'm reporting this for a friend, so I'll try to explain to you the way it was explained to me.

Engine: 96 200 Merc EFI.
Problem: As soon as the boat gets up on plane, the engine shuts down to idle. This happened three times in a row, then it ran fine the rest of the day. It has not happened again since. This was two weeks ago. I thought it may be a fuel blockage problem, but he said that it does not bog down like it's starving for fuel. It sharply drops down to idle. Leads me to think it's electrical related, but what component? Could this be symptoms of a stator going out?

Man that could be a lot of things. Gonna need more information. Could be an ECU, could be as simple as a ground on one the electrical components, could the choke/enrichner be kicking on somehow.... It does sound more electrical, but

I agree with BushCat. I had one with similar conditions earlier this year that turned out to be a broke wire on the TPI. The tough part was that the wire was broke right where it entered the TPI. A real bugger to find. The first place I would look is at the electrical connections, check for corroded or loose connectors, then grounds.

Good luck and keep us informed!

:)

I have a 96 200 Efi and I had the same problem. When you first start the motor watch your voltage, if it is high, at around 17.5 volts your motor will shut down. Check your voltage regulators, mine were visibly Fried. I burnt up an ecu (Big Bucks),and a detonation control and had my boat in the shop for six weeks with no fix before I took the boat back, got in the manual and on IBOATS and started testing everything myself. The voltage on mine would only stay high for a short time and then it would be fine.
Good Luck!
