Ok just found a pin whole in 94 200 merc poppet valve. it seems like it's not sealing good when the plates are reinstalled as it's leaking around the plates. Also there seems to be a rubber grommet that does not fit in there too well. it goes on the end of the crosshaired plastic piece according to the manual but seems like .... i dunno. any help here would be nice.
Tim.

Make sure you have the screw tightened down as far as it can go into the poppet. I had the same problem. Water was leaking through the center screw hole of the diaphragm.

Ok got the popet valve cover to seal finally. It is still running hot on high speed. passing 180 into the red zone on the gauge. 220+ almost. I did notice there is no water comming out a the port hole on the lower unit area and I just rand a short wire though there. would that tiny whole clogged make it run warm? Is that a problem? I changed the stats, water pump ect. help

Make sure that the poppit valve is correct. When you put it in, it should not be under tension. I had the wrong valve in mine. A mechanic and I took a look and found the correct valve. It was about 1/4" shorter than the valve that was installed. This allowed the valve to open under pressure. Temp before - 175 degrees. Temp after inserting the correct valve - 140 degrees.

Good Luck

Re: merc 200 poppet valve leaking

shelbydriver,

After looking at mine tonight the grommets you are talking about actualy fit inside the hole in the head. There is a larger one that fits inside a counter bored area of the hole in the head and a smaller one that fits into the inside edge of the 1st grommet. That smaller grommet leaves the hole that the plastic piece slides into... Basically the grommet(s) are fixed to the head more than the cross-haired plastic piece. Hope this helps, on mine the grommets are well sealed into the head not the plastic piece. Probably sounds redundant but thats the best way I can describe it...

Ok Clost that discribes it very well. I also noticed when I took mine apart there was another gromment I put in there also like the diagram in the book discribes. Maybe I will check the diagram again. Also I kind of had to put it back in under pressure and it seems to open the valve a little so it's sticking outward some. Maybe thats my problem gulp. thanks. will look again and maybe post some pics.
Tim

I think I really goofed up. I some how ended up with 3 bushings there. One big one always stayed in the block, the little one was inside that one, and I tried to put another one on the tip with the crosshaired plasic plunger. doh. That could be it. stay tuned. my bad.

You should only have two... They go into the hole first as a mentioned before. The small grommet fits into the inside of the larger grommet (also called a carrier) and then they go into the hole in the head.

Here is a link to a site that shows a schematic of the parts....You may have to copy and paste this.. This shows the schematic for my Merc. v-6 175, I think its the same as yours. Just to make sure click on Mercury Models at the top part of the screen and you can use your model# and serial # to get the exact schematic for your engine. But I bet its the same one...
Good luck

http://www.dougrussell.com/partscat...berList=120,70,80,20,30,10,180,130,170,140,19 0,40,100,110,90,290,270,250,300,280,260,320,330,350,340,360,0,370,380,400,390,160,150,420,430,410,440,210,200,60,230,240,220,310,50
