Hey guys I picked up my first older merc today and I have a few questions for the experts. First off I think this serial number is for a 78 year model, am I right? Secondly I have never worked on one before. I have plenty experience working on Johnson and a Chrysler that I own but this thing looks like a lot of work just to get to the carb. I have never seen this type of fuel hook up before so can you guys recomend anything to do first so I dont end up cleaning the carb everytime I want to use it. It looks pretty rusty ( been sitting up quite a while). What kind of spark plugs do they take the one I pulled out has no numbers and is flat on the end. I got the motor for 100 bucks and its not locked up so I figured I would give it a shot. Im going to try it out tomorrow if I can get the plugs.

Get a carb kit. Tear it apart, rebuild the cab and probably the fuel pump too. Change all the fuel hoses. Old fuel hoses are of the Devil. Give it a good shot of your favorite penetrating oil in the cylinders ( kroil ) and turn it over a few times by hand to get the rings unstuck from their ring grooves. Let it sit like that a few days while you rebuild the carb before you go to try starting it or anything silly like that.

Those are supposed to use some weird AC plug( can't remember what ) but you see all kinds of stuff in them.

Yep, that's a 1978. The recommended spark plug is NGK BUHW-2, a surface gap plug.
