Merc 200 V-6 clunks then quits turning prop

I have a 1978 Mecury 200 V-6 that gave it up on Friday the 13th. I was under power just starting to plane out and heard a loud clunk, then the motor reved and the prop quit turning. I am new at this game but figure I have the opportunity to learn to rebuild a lower unit. Any advice or suggestions before I take the plunge? The gear case oil is good and I have not taken it apart yet, figured I would do a little research.<br />Thanks<br /><br />I forgot to mention that when I powered down the prop engaged again. I had to try one more time and the same thing happened again. That's when it went back on the trailer.

welcome aboard south48,<br />I would drain my lower unit and see if there is<br />any meatal shavings around the magnet/plug.<br />only takes 5 min. and it's a good place to start.<br />hopefully the prop hub is spun and that's it <br />good luck,<br />M.Y.

Completely drained the gear case and it looks really good. Some very minor metal on the magnet.<br />I guess I will commence the teardown. If nothing else I will now how it ticks.<br />south48

Don't forget to check for a spun prop hub!<br /><br />Keep us updated on your progress!

Update.....<br /> ad4par1, the prop hub is way cool, Thanks.<br /><br /> Hooty, I have a feeling your on the right track and I should receive a plaque from the idiots club. Yes I am a manual owner and I have it torn down looks excellent. I even had my digital camera so I have a great exploded view now. I finally started thinking and realize that the flex in my transom which I thought would be my winter project could be moving enough to pull it out of gear while the throttle is still in go fast. <br /><br /> Let me know what you think, <br />Thanks for the help
