Merc 25 XD Not Starting

Ok Guys I have a tough one. I bought a Lund with a 25 hp Merc '85 last summer, the motor had sat for a long time but I got it running after some time. Took it out and it ran like a champ, on the next trip out it ran great. Then the next day we showed up to fish and we sat in the rain for about 4 hours waiting for the rain to stop. It never did and we tried it the next morning. The motor started up and ran well as I pulled the plug and ran the boat to get some of the water out of the boat, as the day went on the motor ran a little worse. It seemed like the motor ran ok but only at half the speed. Didn't fish again for a month or so and then the motor wouldn't start at all, and when it did it died and ran the same way only about 50% of the speed. I got it home and changed the plugs and have yet to get it started again....

So did water get into the gas can? Did something break loose in the carb? I'm planning on cleaning the carb this weekend. Could a coil be going out? Would that cause it not to start? Talk about a great motor when it was running, now I need to figure out what I did....

Ok, I may have found the problem. I pulled the Carb and started to clean it and found that the plastic float was 90% filled with gas...? Is that common? Seems a little odd, so I think I'll give it a good cleaning, replace the float and hope that will get her running again.
