Hi!
I have a problem with shifter / throttle!
when you press the gear release button, it does not release gear and I am unable to start the boat. I opened the shifter and looks like the gear release button is weared out or broken. It is impossible to look into the actual mechanics without disconnecting the throttle from the engine.
Does anybody have that kind of problem and where I can either buy a throttle or get a repair kit to change this release gear mechanics in the throttle?
I live in Toronto and the boat is on one of the Simcoe marines.
Please help!

you need to ID what brand of control you have there are A LOT

many of the newer ones sell the different parts

depending on what you need it may be worth repiaring or you may need parts that cost more than a new control

tommays

gleb...not exactly sure what you have, never seen a Merc 260 OMC before :) and not sure what marina you're at but I live in Keswick on Simcoe and a good place to check for used parts is Sandy Cove Marine on the 400 at Innisfil road, they have a big used parts section upstairs they call their marine flea market, could be you may find exactly what you need there.

Re: Merc 260 OMC Thorttle does not release gear

Thank you for your posts!
I just bought this boat 3 days ago. So I am very fresh :)
So, it is Doral Citation '86
5.7 L Mercruiser engine
I am pretty sure it's OMC :) with 260 HP.
The control is old :) - that's the only thing I remember. I will check what type of control I have, looks like in my memory sits the word 'silveline" - does it ring the bell, Tommays?
Boating Bob, thanks. Do you have a phone number for this marina?
Cheers.

I got the marina info:
Sandy Cove Marine Co. Ltd.
1982 Commerce Park Drive,
Innisfil, Ontario,
L9S 4A3,
Phone: 705-431-2628, Fax: 705-436-3206
Contact: Scott Dallimore
sales@sandycovemarine.com http://www.sandycovemarine.com

They say that i should bring the control over to them so they will check it.
In order to detach control from the boat I have to detach cables from the engine. Would it be easy to put everything back again in order? Is there any underwater stones?
please advice!
thanks!

It is probably a quicksilver and the black button wont depress.Try giving it a shot with the side of your palm and see if it clicks in.I had the same problem some years back and I had a very good mechanic take the entire assembly apart and could not fix it so I replaced it.Charlie

Charlie!
Thank you for your post!
Yes, it is Quicksilver! Black button does not depress!
I have exactly the same problem!
It worked once (palm hitting technique) - but looks like it is weared out completly. Or I hit too hard :)
Where did you get the replacement part and how much it costed you?

Re: Merc 260 OMC Thorttle does not release gear

The place that I had checking it out had a used one that they replaced it with. The guy spent at least an hour with the old unit on his bench disassembling it and reassembling it with no luck so I dont think you should try fixing it but it couldnt hurt to take the silver cover off and drench it with a spray lube and hit it a few more times. Its worth the 2 minutes it will take to see if your problem is simpler than mine was.Charlie

Thanks, Charlie.
I will try.
I already disassembled the unit, but did not disconnect it from the wires yet.
If I would disconnect it completely, what should I be aware of when I will place a new unit?
Some mark to put on gas/gear ?

Thanks!
