My 99 Merc 3.0l is fitted with a one piece oil pan gasket, it has an oil leak at the front under the timing cover caused by the gasket stretching . When I tighten the cover bolts the gasket will not seal because it squeezes out. The rest of the gasket is OK and it's a real hassle and quite expensive (over $100 UK price) to replace. Can I cut off the front part of the gasket and replace it with the front section from the earlier 4 piece oil pan gasket set?

Are you putting any kind of sealer on the gasket? If so, DON'T.
Other than the corners as mentioned in the service manual.
