So the 3000 box seems very flimsy and poorly made like it will break into crappy little plastic pieces. Is this normal? My father has a 4000 series shifter side only(the hidden piece isn't there) Will the visible side of the 4000 snug onto the 3000 control box hidden behind my gunnel panel?

OK I understand a bit better, and I believe there is a very good chance it would work. The issue with the one on ebay it appears to be one for an inboard not an I/O, don't see trailer function. Your 4000 is the same one on my Rinker and has been working fine. There are 4 different versions of the control cable box which the shifter bolts to but the spline from what I have found look to be the same.

Thanks! It's worth a shot. Wasting time is better than wasting money

Oh yes, even more so when there is beer involved

Completely agree. I have to wait for my bloodwork to come back before I drink anymore. Might have an adrenal gland issue or diabetes. 31 and I'm falling apart.

Is it from the spline being a different size or holes in the wrong place.

When searching, have not found a control which mentioned different model years, most say will work, maybe they have adapters, don't know

They didn't say I just got a bland answer. Looking at them I'm betting it's the mounting holes.

" Hello, sorry, it will not. You will need to go with a new Mercury 4000 series control. You will also need to change out the cables to the newer gen 2 cables.

Regards,
Great Lakes Skipper"
