i got a 1983 searay 270da, with a merc 330 (serial#6255661) tr/trs drive unit (serial#6387738) and transom plate (serial#6203277), with a velvet drive trans model#10-18-014, serial#6643.

ok bought the boat...put it in runs beautiful, had a growl when turning and trimming, i knew either gimbal bearing or ujoints or both, well got the drive off now, ujoints look ok, still getting replaced, gimbal bearing is shot, for sure the noise i was getting, theres also a bearing forward of the gimbal bearing i see is bad, looks like the engine and everything has to come out to change that bearing, is that bearing located in the gimbal or transom assembly or in the tail assembly of the transmission, or am i way off base all together. im downloading the pdf file on tr/trs drives right now (428mb.. lol) from Don S he had posted, thanks much Don! hope that shines some light for me, anyone else with helpful words is much appreciated also!! been a mechanic most my life, just dont have the provisions to lift a engine at those heights.

Re: merc 330 with velvet drive and tr/trs drive bearing issue

ok the shop told me way over $2000 to fix my problems, that was enough for me to take care of it myself, merc 330TR #6255661, TR drive #6387738, with a velvet drive trans, anyway, engine and trans is out,, got the bad bearings out of the trans, local bearing house has those parts for me, i need to find the gasket for the trans output housing, and also a installed depth for the seal, didnt know it didnt have a shoulder when i took it out. im getting the alignment tool for re-installation, didnt change any adjustments taking it out, so i should be pretty close. any links , downloads, or any info that would help me out during this job would be great!!..thanks all!!
