Merc 350 dies when put in gear

So, I just replaced the raw water impellar after an engine overheat and got the lower unit on the outdrive all buttoned up. I then gave her a test run to ensure everything worked. The motor fired up right away which was a good sign, then i noticed the prop was turning... but I am not in gear. I checked the throttle and sure enough, i was not in gear. I then attempted to put it in forward and the throttle cable seemed real tight. As soon as I got past neutral though, the motor cut out. I put it back in neutral and started up again right away. Attempted to put in reverse and same thing...

When I removed the lower unit I had the throttle in forward gear, maybe I messed something up in there?

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated

Thanks

Derek

You need to give any info you can,Year, make ,outdrive etc.It sounds like a shift cable is bad. Replace that and your problem will go away.Jerry

Did it shift ok before you took the lower unit apart?

If it did, then you got the shift shafts in the lower uint misaligned when you put it back together.

Its a 1988 Mercruiser 5.7L Alpha 1. It shifted perfect before I removed the lower unit, I imagine that it may be the shift shaft.

Before I pulled the lower I placed it in forward and then removed the unit, thinking that would have taken care of any issues. What would be the easiest fix for this?

Thank you again for the suggestions

Re: Merc 350 dies when put in gear

First put your control in forwad (not throttle only)

Second raiser the drive to full trailer postion

Will be easier if you have 2 people for the next couple of steps!

Third seperate the lower gearcase from the upper gearcase not al the way but just far enough so you can see the 2 shift shafts were they mate together. the foot on the brass shaft in the upper gear case needs to point straight a head.

Now turn the shaft in the lower gearcase clockwise while turnnig the prop to the left (counter-clockwise). This locks the lower gearcase in forward gear.

Next push the lower gearcase upward and ingauge the upper shift shaft with the lower shaft (make sure the foot is facing forward when the 2 shafts mesh).

Tighten all the fasteners then drop the drive to level postion and fill the gearcase back up.

Good Luck RJ
