Hi all

I am getting so frustrated, but not giving in to defeat yet. I bought a 1988 Baja Sport 190,. 4.3 ltr Merc, last year. I found out that the trim motor did not work... So I ordered one off of eBay which came damaged, .I sent it back,. Then ordered a rebuild kit. I rebuilt mine and low and behold that did not work either. So I bought one off of Amazon, installed it today,. Bled the lines on the cylinders or I think so, .Turned the key on, .ran the motor up and down. The motor goes all the way down and humms once down, .then I push the switch up and it runs for about 7 seconds and stops.

So..... I thought the battery was totally charged when I started doing this, but I found out the battery will not even turn the motor over,. So I am charging it now.

What the heck,. I am tired and cannot figure out the trim motor up issue.

Any ideas?

If the battery is low the trim is not going to work, or work very well.

Are you saying now you have charged the battery and it still will not raise,?
Does the motor run but not raise or not run?

It sounds like you have an Alpha I outdrive. If so, the trim limit switch is on one of the outdrive pivots, exposed to the water.

Try using the trailer button to raise the outdrive. If that doesn't work, suspect the trim solenoid or wiring.

Thank you all

I am going out first thing tomorrow stick my fully charged battery in.

I hope the trim motor works,. It was working but for about 5 seconds when I wrote the post yesterday.

I watched some videos on the trim limit switches and how to clean them, in case that's it.

The whole pump unit is brand new, so I did not even think a solenoid?

I winterized the engine last December so I am gonna hook up some water to the lower unit and hope it starts.

This whole boating world is new to me, so if I appear in intelligent or asked a question wrong
Please forgive me.

In salt water, the entire trim limit switches can rot out, in a few years. Not sure what effect even fresh water will have on a trim limit switch on a '88.

Don't sweat the trim limit switch. They are a nice to have but not essential.
