I have a merc 1995 40 hp outboard. Pee hole when water comes out is very weak. The other day I was pulling someone on a tube. When we stopped I turned the engine off. 3 minutes later when I restarted the engine it it seemed to push air out of the pee hole. Weird way to describe but like a whale exhaling when coming out of the water. Then it took about 10 seconds for the water to come out of the peehole...Just replaced the impeller two days ago didnt solve the problem. Any ideas?

If your pee is plumbed off your thermostat, it has to open for you to get any kind of flow. When you said that you were venting air I can only surmise that it is failing you, not opening when it should and the air may actually be steam and it is from boiling water in your powerhead....i.e. temp in there is at the boiling point (212F at sea level), not the normal opening temp of 143 for most Mercs I know.

Pull the stat and put it in a pan of water slowly coming to a boil with a candy thermometer. The opening temp is stamped on the pellet and is probably 143 or thereabouts.

It opens slowly but it should start at the correct temp..........or just get another and go from there.

While it's out, check out your block's water passages for any crud. If a lot, that could be throughout your engine and would/should be addressed.

Mark,

I can not locate the thermostat. It appears I may not have a thermostat but a temperture switch. Are you familiar with any of this?
