Merc 40 HP wont start

I have recently rebuilt the powerhead of a early 70's Mercury 40HP (had water seeping through the exhaust plate). Anyway its all put back together now and won't start. I have taken out spark plugs and tested the spark - very weak and erratic. Carby was rebuilt recently - there is fresh fuel there. Any clues would be most appreciated.<br />Thanks in anticipation<br /><br />Peter

Check to make sure you have spark. If you dont you probably need a new stator. First thing to do is check spark.
