Merc 402

Hello,<br /><br />I have inherited a 1978 Merc 40HP 402. It seems to be in excellent condition but has not ran for a few years. Fresh water only. It came with an extra Stator? How can I tell if the is a bad or a replacement? Any suggestions on getting this motor fired up will be appreciated.<br /><br />FYI,<br /><br />I also have the manual for this.<br /><br />thanks,<br />E

any motor that sits that long is gonna need the<br />fuel system gone through. carbs/pumps/lines etc.<br />I would also remove the plugs, squirt some good<br />lube in there and turn the flywheel by hand for a<br />while in case there is any rust in cylinders.<br />change lower unit oil & install new impeller.<br />new plugs and fresh gas/oil and fire her up.<br />the manual will give you test proceedure for stator.<br />good luck,<br />M.Y.
